Discover Barron Gorge National Park
Located approximately 27 km north-west of Cairns, Barron Gorge is one of the mostpopular national parks in Queensland, and it is not difficult to see why. With huge stretches of magnificent rainforest, rugged mountains and crystal clear waterfalls to explore, it’s a spectacular place to hike, picnic, bird watch and relax within easy reach of our Cairns holiday apartments.
There are a number of walking tracks to explore, ranging from the 20 minute boardwalk to Barron Falls Lookout to full day hikes through tall dense rainforest. Whichever track you choose to follow, you can expect to see a diverse selection of wildlife, including possums, tree kangaroos, lizards, flying foxes and even the endangered southern cassowary. Brightly coloured butterflies and birds are easy to spot against the lush green of the rainforest – don’t forget your binoculars!
A number of commercial boat operators offer river rafting cruises along the Barron River through the heart of the park. This is a great, environmentally friendly way to access some of the more remote and less seen areas of the gorge, and there are also selected areas where you can canoe and kayak.
