Celebrate Chinese New Year in Cairns with a tropical street festival with ties back to traditional Chinese culture and the excitement of Chinese Lions, Dragons and Fire Crackers. The Cairns Airport Chinese New Year Street Festival is held annually at the Historic Cairns Chinatown in Grafton Street Cairns. The event showcases local Asian cultures and highlights the significance of Chinese settlement in Cairns.
The Chinese New Year Festival or Spring festival as it known in China is the most important Chinese celebration of the year. The Cairns Chinese New Year Festival has been held annually by CADCAI since 2004,and has become a popular and much anticipated event, attracting more than 15000 people in 2013. The Cairns CNY festival showcases North Queensland’s cultural diversity and rich Chinese heritage through music, dance and cultural performances, food, market stalls, and a parade featuring the tradional Chinese dragon, lions and the 12 Zodiac Animals. The festival is free event suitable for families and all ages, so be sure to mark it on your calendar!
2016 is “Year of the Monkey”. The Year of the Monkey celebrations in 2016 will be spread overa 2-3 week period in February, with the signature event, the CNY Street Festival being held again in the heart of the orignal Cairns Chinatown precinct 1886mSachs St ( now Grafton St.) Don’t miss this event. Save the date on Saturday 13 February 2016 and enjoy the street festival from 4pm to 9pm (Street Parade starts at 5.00pm).
